The Doctor

Due to the scratching, cross-hatching and mark making in the scratch board process, there is always a texture to the drawing. For years in class I told my students that their reference should be fur, fins or feathers. That drawing animals was a natural since the subject would dictate the direction of their lines. Avoid anything smooth such as skin, so essentially don’t draw people.

Then I saw the work of the late Diana Lee, her portraits absolutely blew me away. After the initial reaction of “This is impossible”, came the “How did she do that?” and finally “I have to try that.” With age comes the maturity to understand I’m not going to get this on the first try so I knew this experiment had to be a series, and what could I select for portraits that would look like a set? You know Who. It became the many faces of the Doctor.

It was fun and I learned a lot in the process and I continue to learn today. I also find I’m now two Doctors short.
